Tinsel Filled Ornaments

I may have mentioned before that Christmas is sort of “my” season. I love all things Christmas!

But since we don’t actually get what I would call Christmas weather around here, I seem to have to work a lot harder to get into the “spirit” of things! I can’t quite get used to Christmas in shorts and t-shirt weather somehow! I grew up in Bavaria (in the south of Germany) where winters would mean cold weather, fairly deep snow in the mountains, plenty of ice and snow in the valleys and all that came with it: Skiing, taking walks in crisp first snow, Christkindlmarkets where you got so cold that the Gluehwein (mulled wine) and sugar burnt almonds were not only delicious but a welcome way to warm up from the inside out!

So yes,  I somewhat miss winters, even though the weather around here is pretty lovely at Christmas time. Usually a balmy 75 F … it’s just not the kind of weather I associate with Christmas! So I have to work a little harder to conjure up that seasonal spirit!

So, this year I want to start a bit earlier. I want to make the most of Advent and I have so many decoration and craft ideas this year, that I think you’ll see quite a few of them even before Thanksgiving on this blog.  Not to mention all the recipes!

Homer comes to mind: “Mmmmm, Christmas!” *picture drooling Homer*  

And here’s something to start with.

A quick and easy way to make “cheesy” tinsel look great and give an ornament that extra bit of depth and interest.

All you need is some tinsel – the kind that has the wire inside – and some bobble ornaments with a removable top. Mine are the plastic kind that IKEA sold a few years ago, but any glass or plastic will do, as long as you can remove and replace the top cap with out breaking them!

Carefully remove the top of the ornament and set aside.

Cut a 4-5 inch long piece of the tinsel.

Roll it in a spiral pattern from the right, stopping in the middle. Then roll the left side in spiral pattern to the middle too.

Since it’s a little hard to see, I drew you a little diagram.

Once rolled, fold both spirals up, so they meet in the middle (step 2.) You should now have a little tinsel Pompom.

Take a minute to pull out any “trapped” strands of tinsel to make the Pompom as round as possible.

Then insert the tinsel ball into the ornament and replace the cap.

That’s it

You can of course use different color tinsel, even twist two colors together before you roll them up to match your decor!
